About

Sportova is a premium fitness-equipment and full-service gym-design studio founded in 2023. Its starting point is simple: the gym is a room, not merely an equipment purchase. Layout, floor transitions, mirror placement, ceiling height, sightlines, storage, AV, and finishes all shape whether the space feels connected to the rest of the home and worth returning to.

Each project begins with a consultation about lifestyle, training habits, design preferences, and the architecture of the home. Sportova then develops custom layouts and floor plans, photorealistic renderings, a materials-and-finishes direction, and an equipment specification. Through its manufacturer relationships, the team can coordinate custom frame colors, colorways, upholstery, and specialty finishes before managing procurement, delivery, and installation. Sportova works alongside a client's existing architect, builder, and interior designer, and agrees its design fee before the work begins rather than billing hourly.

The studio's signature equipment line is PENT, followed by Watson, NOHrD and WaterRower, FYSIK, and Alama Studio. Its work can also include custom racks and storage, sauna, steam and cold-plunge planning, custom finishes, and the Sportova gym rug.

The New Canaan showroom at 108 Main Street opened after Sportova had operated remotely since 2023. Visitors can see and handle equipment, review materials, and imagine an entire room rather than choosing a single machine in isolation. The gallery also presents Samuel Madeleine furniture and Madeleine's black-and-white photography, which the team often incorporates into gym designs.

A representative 2026 project is a boutique wellness members club in Winter Park, Florida, where design visualizations can be compared directly with the completed room. It captures Sportova's philosophy: a well-designed environment removes friction and creates a sense of ritual, and a gym should be one of the best-designed rooms in the house.

Meet the owner

Sam and Madeleine Kimball — Founders

Sam and Madeleine met while working in the design industry in Boston and bonded over furniture, art, and the way a room's aesthetics change how people use it. With more than a decade of combined industry experience, they founded Sportova in 2023 to serve a category they felt had been overlooked: premium fitness equipment and full-service gym design for spaces that deserve the same attention as the rest of the home.

Questions and answers

What prompted you to start Sportova?

Sam and Madeleine met while working in the design industry in Boston and bonded over furniture, art, and how much a space's aesthetics change the way people use it. With more than a decade in the industry between them, they founded Sportova in 2023 as a premium equipment and full-service gym design brand—the gap they saw was a category no one was serving properly.

What made you see the need?

It was not a single project; it was a pattern. Beautifully appointed homes often treated the gym as an afterthought tucked into a basement corner, with industrial-looking equipment, an uninspired layout, and a room disconnected from the rest of the house. Designers might spend months on the kitchen and living room while the gym was decided last, if at all.

Which completed project represents your work particularly well?

A boutique wellness members club installed in Winter Park, Florida, in 2026. The design visualization and finished room can be shown side by side, which is one of the clearest demonstrations of what Sportova delivers.

What happens from the first conversation through installation?

The process starts with a consultation about lifestyle, training habits, and design preferences, plus an assessment of the home's architecture. Sportova develops custom layouts and floor plans, photorealistic renderings, materials and finishes, and an equipment specification. The team coordinates procurement, delivery, and installation, works alongside the client's architect, builder, and interior designer, and agrees the design fee before the project starts rather than billing hourly.

What should someone expect when visiting the New Canaan showroom?

The Main Street showroom lets clients see and handle the equipment in person. People often arrive expecting to choose one piece and leave with a vision for the whole room. The gallery also presents Samuel Madeleine furniture and Madeleine's black-and-white photography, which are frequently incorporated into gym designs.

What is the biggest misconception about designing a home gym?

That it is an equipment purchase. It is a room. Layout, floor transitions, mirror placement, ceiling height, sightlines, and AV are often decided last; by then the equipment dictates the space instead of the other way around.

How would you describe Sportova's design philosophy in one sentence?

A well-designed environment removes friction and creates a sense of ritual—a gym should be the best-designed room in the house, not the one you hide in the basement.

Which brands and categories define the Sportova point of view?

Sportova leads with PENT, followed by Watson, NOHrD and WaterRower, FYSIK, and Alama Studio. The studio also emphasizes custom racks and storage, sauna, steam and cold-plunge planning, custom finishes, and the Sportova gym rug.
