What Grace Farms is
Grace Farms is an 80-acre cultural and humanitarian center where architecture, landscape, art, nature, community, justice, and faith are presented as connected ideas. It is neither a conventional museum nor simply a park. The experience is deliberately open-ended: walk, sit, look, join a program, have tea, encounter an artwork, or follow the River building through the terrain.
The River was designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese firm SANAA. Its glass volumes and long, reflective roof descend with the slope, creating a sequence of spaces rather than a single monumental object.
> Grace Farms is free to visit and open to all ages, but advance daily registration is requested. Reserve only through Grace Farms.
What to see and do
Begin with the River building and allow its route to set the pace. The spaces include areas for gathering, performance, food, reading, recreation, and contemplation. Beyond the architecture, trails and restored landscapes reward an unhurried visit.
Programming changes throughout the year and may include art installations, nature walks, talks, performances, family activities, tea experiences, and work connected to Design for Freedom.
Walk the River building from top to bottom.
Check current art and exhibition information.
Explore the meadows and trails in suitable footwear.
Visit the Commons for available light fare and beverages.
Review the events calendar before choosing a date.
Plan the visit
Grace Farms is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am–5pm and Sunday from noon–5pm; it is closed Monday. Admission is free and advance registration is requested. The public address is 365 Lukes Wood Road.
The site is outside downtown New Canaan, so driving or rideshare is the practical option. The visitor information lists accessible parking and wheelchair access; visitors who need a specific accommodation can arrange it with the visitor team.
Redeem registration at the Welcome Center.
Allow at least two hours; architecture and nature visitors can easily spend longer.
The one-mile Cattail Pond loop passes ten habitats.
Dress for both indoor spaces and outdoor walking.
Pair Grace Farms with downtown
Grace Farms does not need to consume the entire day. A strong plan is to visit in the morning, return downtown for lunch and shops, then continue to the Glass House Visitor Center, Waveny Park, or an evening event.
For architecture enthusiasts, Grace Farms and the Glass House form an unusually rich pairing: two internationally important sites in one town, separated by period, purpose, materials, and relationship to public life.
Morning at Grace Farms; lunch and downtown afterward.
Glass House tour first; Grace Farms only if registration and hours align.
Check the current Thursday Night list for participating shops and confirm extended hours.
Art, food, and guided experiences
A self-directed visit works well for the architecture and landscape. Official public tours add context about SANAA’s design, the site’s initiatives, and the relationship between the River and the land; they run Thursdays from May through December and Saturdays year-round at 10:30am.
The Commons sells snacks, beverages, and light fare during visitor hours, with lunch service ending earlier. Tea Pavilion service runs Tuesday–Friday from 11am–2pm and Saturday–Sunday from noon–5pm.
Redeem daily registration at the Welcome Center on arrival.
Grace Farms provides a free Bloomberg Connects digital guide.
Groups of eight or more use the official group process.
Visits and tours are reserved directly through Grace Farms, not third-party bundles.
